HP’s First Multi-touch Laptop, the TouchSmart tx2

Nov  08
22

The first multi-touch laptop was bound to be released sooner or later, especially with Windows Mobile 7 being developed to support multi-touch. And it was HP, not Apple, that managed to pull it off. The TouchSmart tx2 will get you multi-touch two-finger control but there’s a catch to it. The whole multi-touch thing works only with the HP MediaSmart suite of applications. The TouchSmart tx2 is a 12.1 inch laptop which can get you up to 8GB of RAM. An AMD Athlon X2 Dual-Core processor will power it all up and you can opt for storage space anywhere from 160 to 500GB. The WXGA screen has an embedded N-trig digitizer which will help you do all that multi-touching. No word on availability and pricing yet, but we’ll keep you posted!

With the first multi-touch laptop already out, we’re going to wait for the rest of them to appear.

Toshiba Dynabook PWX

Somehow we missed the good news for Japan last week, because Toshiba has launched a new series of Dynabook Satellite laptops, named PXW. At the moment there are 2 models on the shelves, more specifically the 55GW and 57GW.

The price difference between each is €130 ($174), and that is only caused by the different processor and graphics card. The low-end model 55GW has an Intel Celeron 575 at 2GHz and an Intel GL40 Express chipset, while the high-end laptop features an Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 at 2.26GHz.

All the other specifications, such as the 15.4-inch LCD screen with a 1280×800 resolution, standard 2GB of memory that can be expanded up to 4GB, the DVD Super Multi Drive, Wi-Fi, and multi-card reader, are present in both models.

The price is €800 ($1,075) and €930 ($1,250) respectively.

Toshiba annouce MacBook Air Killer

Toshiba’s growth in the notebook manufacturing market has been tremendous. Credit this to its Portégé laptop range. Now, Toshiba is planning to release its own super-thin notebook that could possibly rival Apple’s MacBook Air. This new model claims to be the world’s thinnest and lightest fully featured machine to date.

The Toshiba R600 weighs in at 1.1kg (2.4lb) and measures 283 x 215.8 x 19.5-25.5mm. The R600 is a bit similar to its older brother, the R500, which weighs exactly the same and has identical dimensions. The new model comes in two flavors: a 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SU9400 model with 1GB of 800MHz DDR 2 memory and a 128GB solid-state drive, or a cheaper 1.2GHz Core 2 Duo SU9300 version with 2GB of 800MHz DDR 2 memory and a 160GB SATA HDD.

The R600 still has the same dangerously bendy 12.1in, 1280 x 800 screen found on the R500. However, Toshiba’s swapped out the R500’s Intel 945GMS chipset and GMA 3000 integrated graphics in favour of a G45 chipset with a GMA X4500 graphics core.

Nonetheless, the R600 supports 802.11n Wi-Fi and Toshiba’s even found room to slot in a 0.3-megapixel webcam and a microphone into the R600’s lid. Both versions of the R600 support Bluetooth version 2.1.

On the R600 you’ll also find a fingerprint reader, four USB ports, a Gigabit Ethernet port and a SD memory card slot.
