Canon has added four new cameras to their entry-level PowerShot A series. The first two are the A3000 and A3100 IS, which have two big changes from previous models. There’s no longer an optical viewfinder, and the cameras now use proprietary lithium-ion batteries, instead of AAs. Here are the specs:




PowerShot A3000 IS
- 10.0 Megapixel CCD
- F2.7-5.6, 4X optical zoom lens, equivalent to 35 - 140 mm
- Optical image stabilization
- 2.7″ LCD display with 230,000 pixels
- Point-and-shoot operation; Smart Auto mode selects one of 18 scene modes for you
- Face detection with auto redeye removal
- Records movies at 640 x 480 (30 fps) with sound
- SD/SDHC/SDXC/MMC/MMCplus/HC MMCplus memory card slot (what a mouthful)
- Uses NB-8L lithium-ion battery; 230 shots per charge
- Ships in February for $150
PowerShot A3100 IS - changes:
- 12.1 Megapixel CCD
- 240 shots per charge using NB-8L battery
- Comes in red, blue, and silver
- Priced at $180
