This is quite a blow for RIM folks! It looks like 12% of those iPhone 3GS buyers have decided to replace their old BlackBerry handset with the new Apple phone.

Compared to last year more BlackBerry owners have switched their Berry with an iPhone. The studied has been conducted by Piper Jaffray on 256 early iPhone 3GS buyers in New York and Minnesota stores. Apple is slowly getting more market share and RIM should definitely be worried. After Nokia who is leading the smartphone market with an impressive 41.2% share comes RIM with 19.9% and Apple with 10.8%.

Other interesting facts the survey revealed:

  • 28% of early iPhone 3GS buyers are new AT&T customers (compared to 38% last year)
  • 54% of early iPhone 3GS buyers will still buy an iPod
  • 56% of early iPhone 3GS adopters have upgraded from a previous version

What about you? Have you purchased your iPhone 3GS yet? What phone have you been using before the 3GS?
