If you already own an original iPhone and you qualify for a 3G iPhone upgrade from AT&T, you can choose to keep the original iPhone without the phone features. Practically when you get your 3G iPhone, your first iPhone will be deactivated and turned into an iPod Touch.

AT&T would prefer you passed that phone to someone else so they can activate it and use it, but that’s not the only option available. AT&T has confirmed you will be able to keep the former handset and use it to play video and music and to connect to the Internet where WiFi is available. An AT&T spokesperson said:

If the [original] device is not re-activated as a wireless phone after you’ve upgraded to iPhone 3G, it will still work as an iTunes player and can access Wi-Fi.

If you choose to go this way, make sure you upgraded your first iPhone with iPhone Software 2.0 before you deactivate it. The software upgrade might not be possible after deactivation.
