Nikon today introduced their new D60 digital SLR. The D60 is positioned as a step-up from the D40x, though the differences between the cameras aren’t groundbreaking. Here are the highlights:

Nikon D60

  • 10.2 effective Megapixel CCD
  • Supports most Nikon F-mount lenses with a 1.5X focal length conversion; only AF-S lenses will support autofocus (like the D40/D40x)
  • EXPEED image processing “concept”
  • Compact, well constructed body; smallest Nikon D-SLR available
  • 2.5″ LCD display with 230k pixels; an eye sensor turns off info screen on LCD when you’re using the optical viewfinder
  • Optical viewfinder has 0.8X magnification and 95% coverage
  • Updated dust reduction system shakes off dust and channels particles away from the sensor using an “Airflow Control System”
  • Full manual controls; ISO range of 100 - 1600; shutter speed range of 30 - 1/4000 sec
  • RAW image format supported
  • Shoots at 3 frames/second in burst mode (not sure for how many shots)
  • Active D-Lighting lets you brighten up shadow areas of photos at the time a photo is taken
  • Lots of retouching options in playback mode: redeye removal, trimming, color filters, and more
  • New stop motion animation function lets you create a movie out of (up to) 100 JPEGs
  • SD/SDHC memory card slot; Eye-Fi wireless cards supported as well
  • Uses EN-EL9 lithium-ion battery; 500 shots per charge
  • USB 2.0 High Speed support
  • Ships with an F3.5-5.6, 18 - 55 mm VR lens in February for $750

In addition to the D60, Nikon also announced three new lenses:

  • F3.5-5.6, 16 - 85 mm ED SWM VR AF-S lens - ships in March for $649
  • F2.8, 60 mm Micro Nikkor ED SWM AF-S lens - ships in March for $549
  • F3.5, 24 mm PC-E ED lens with tilt/shift functionality - ships this spring for $1929
