The Ipod TouchÂ
And now the moment we’ve all been waiting for.
Every rumor site’s dream come true.
Touch comes to the iPod.
The iPod touch, is a reincarnation of the iPhone. In fact its everything but. Take one quick look and you’d be fooled. Its got the same Springboard Home screen, but with only 7 icons on top, for applications like Safari (yes its got Wifi we’ll get to that later), YouTube, Calendar, Contacts, Clock, Calculator, and Settings. The bottom has four icons that resemble Leopard’s new dock, for music, videos, photos and yes the iTunes WiFi store (we’ll get to that in a separate story as well).
So where to begin. Its got a “geourgeous 3.5-inch display” and of course the iPhone’s multi-touch interface. You can browse through albums using cover flow with a flick of the hand, pinch photos to zoom in, and automatically shift from portrait to landscape orientation.
It comes with WiFi too, thanks to a built in chip on the upper left corner on its back. This enables the iPod touch to be used as an Internet device. Browse the web with Safari and watch YouTube videos as well. And of course the most important of it all is buy new music off the new WiFi store.
The iPod touch isn’t shipping yet but one reason from getting it altogether is the new low price of the iPhone. I’ll get to that later as well. I told you there’s a lot to talk about. I haven’t even said Starbucks yet.
The iPod touch comes in 8GB and 16GB models, selling at $299 and $399 respectively. They aren’t available yet, but should be shipping in the next few weeks. You can now pre-order them online. The device last reasonable well up to 22 hours of audio and up to 5 hours of video.
We think its worth every penny. Having used the iPhone as a video player, I know this is the way to go to have great portable video, if only Apple could offer in in larger capacities we’d be sold.
The new iPod Video
And in its place come the last remaining survivors of the click-wheel iPods, Apple calls them the iPod classic. They’re basically thinner 5.5G iPods with the new anodized metal enclosure found in the 2G nanos.
And they come in just black and silver.
The iPod classic is available in up to a 160GB, that’s a heck of a lot of space for music and video, in fact its probably bigger than most laptop HDDs of current users.
Just like the iPod nano, the iPod classic sports the new enhanced interface, which promises a whole new way to browse and view music and video. Its two column format allows you to scroll through your library on the left side while getting a preview on the right.
Cover Flow is now a standard among all iPods with screens. Use the Click Wheel to flip through album covers. Now you’ll have to be more anal about makings sure all your music has album art and they all look nice and even. Trust me, I’ve been there, spending hours tweaking my album art so they look great on my iPhone.
The 80GB which can store up to 20,000 songs, up to 25,000 photos, or up to 100 hours of video is priced at $249, while the humungous 160GB model is priced at $349 and can store a whopping 40,000 songs, 25,000 photos, or 200 hours of video. Now that’s a whole lot in your pocket.
Battery life is an amazing 40 hours of audio and 7 hours of video.
The same 3 games, iQuiz, Klondike and Vortex now come free with the iPod classic as well. Think you’ve heard it all, hold you breath and skip to the story above. The best is yet to come.
the new iPod nano
Shorter and thinner (6.5mm) than its predecessor the new Nano is a bit wider, to accommodate a bigger screen to allow for video playback. It also supports an enhanced interface, that features a new split screen, navigate on the left side and see a preview on the right.
As expected we’re also seeing cover flow debut, and an iPhone-eque way of selecting tracks via the album art. Users get a fully functional video ipod too including the ability to watch movies, tv shows, and listen to podcasts or audio books and browse through photos.
You can now also play games on the Nano. Yey! Games sell for $4.99 each, but the nano comes with 3 already. You’ll get iQuiz, Klondike, and Vortex. Yey! Yey!
The new nanos also sport a new 320×240 brighter display that’s supposedly 65% brighter than before and come in 4GB and 8GB models which sell at $149 and $199 respectively. The 4GB model can store up to 1000 songs, 3500 photos, 4 hours of video or some of each, while the 8GB model stores up to 2000 songs, 7000 photos or 8 hours of video.
The new nano is available in all same dull colors as the new shuffles (sorry Apple we’re not loving it, although maybe black is fine). Battery life on this new device is rated at 24 hours for audio and up to 5 hours for video.
